A fond farewell

It is my task to bring some sad news to the ETSI and 3GPP community. François Courau, who was the TSG RAN Chairman for a record eight years between 2001 and 2009, passed away last week.

In addition to being a prominent leader in 3GPP, François was an active figure in ETSI Technical Committee SMG and also in the earlier work within the CEPT - as a part of the Groupe Spécial Mobile.

As a member of the GSM "Permanent Nucleus" of full-time experts, he used his formidable skills to help maintain the impetus of GSM development, following the work as it was transferred to ETSI, in 1989.

He went on to hold a number of leadership positions in ETSI SMG and ETSI MSG as well as holding the Chairmanship of 3GPP RAN. In all, François gave more than a quarter of a century to standards and played a significant role in defining GSM, UMTS and LTE systems.

Control and User Plane Separation of EPC nodes (CUPS)

At the recent CT#76 meeting (June 2017), 3GPP has completed the Release 14 specification of CUPS – set to be a key core network feature for many operators.

CUPS stands for Control and User Plane Separation of EPC nodes and provides the architecture enhancements for the separation of functionality in the Evolved Packet Core’s SGW, PGW and TDF. This enables flexible network deployment and operation, by distributed or centralized deployment and the independent scaling between control plane and user plane functions - while not affecting the functionality of the existing nodes subject to this split.

Mission Critical Services in 3GPP

A platform for mission critical (MC) communications and MC Services has been a key priority of 3GPP in recent years and is expected to evolve into the future by taking more requirements, from different sectors of the global critical communications industry, on board.

This article provides an overview of what was achieved so far in the MC domain within 3GPP and also gives an outlook of what can be expected in the near future. We plan to create a more detailed paper on MC Services, which will summarize the use cases and functional aspects of Rel-13, Rel-14 and upcoming Rel-15, later this year.

Driven by the 3GPP release schedule, the mission critical related functionalities have been phased across them, each release encompassing a complete set of standards for equipment vendors and operators to phase their implementations and deployments, based on market demands.

A new video is on-line today, covering the transition from Rel-14 completion to the task of meeting two major milestones for Rel-15, within the next twelve months.

The video has news on the early drop of 5G NR specifications for December 2017 and some words on the full set of Rel-15 features - due by June 2018.

5G Phase 1 underway in CT Groups

The latest Plenary meeting of the Core Network and Terminals Technical Specification Group (CT TSG), held last week in West Palm Beach, Florida, has seen good progress in the Working Group’s study phase on 5G.

Existing & new protocols for the service based architecture (SBA), network slicing, Policy and Charging Control (PCC) as well as mobility and session management and many other features are currently under evaluation in a number of new 3GPP Technical Reports:

  • TR 24.890 - CT WG1 aspects of 5G System Phase 1
  • TR 29.890 - CT WG3 aspects of 5G System Phase 1
  • TR 29.891 - CT WG4 aspects of 5G System Phase 1
  • TR 31.890 - CT WG6 aspects of 5G System Phase 1

Besides that, the following, new, Release 15 Work Items were agreed. These are features that will immediately progress in to the normative phase:
